SECTION 1.

Sir,

Messrs. Dixon and Co. to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received April 22.)

Whitworth House, Princess Street, Manchester,

April 21, 1911.

DURING the last few days we have noticed statements in the press to the effect that an agreement is virtually concluded between His Majesty's Government and China, by which the duty is to be trebled in regard to the opin traffic, and that Great Britain has consented to the cessation of importations of Indian opium into China as soon as China has completely suppressed the growth of the poppy.

Although the restriction apparently only refers to Indian-grown opium, we presume that, if Indian opium is to be excluded, any new regulation will also apply to Turkish, Persian, and other growths of opium.

Thanking you in anticipation for your kind reply on this point,

We

e are, &c.

H. C. DIXON AND CO.
